A History of Caring
As the first medical institution in Santa Clara County, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has forged a long tradition of service and dedication to the health of the community. In 1855 the first six patients were cared for in a converted house near the Guadalupe River in downtown San Jose. In 1876, the first hospital building was completed at the present site.

Today our new facility stands on those same grounds and offers a wide variety of medical services. Santa Clara Valley Medical Center cares for thousands of hospitalized patients and provides treatment for a half-million outpatient and emergency visits annually.

Make a Difference - Volunteer
Volunteers at SCVMC are a positive, well-trained presence in the hospital and clinics. They make patients their top priority and serve as one team working together for the good of the patients, visitors and staff.
Volunteers

The Volunteer Services Department has two programs: The Adult Program and The Teen Program.

Both programs are open to individuals who meet the following requirements:

A sincere desire to be a positive, helpful presence in the hospital and clinics
The ability to complete the required number of service hours
The ability to serve people of diverse backgrounds, ethnic groups, and physical abilities
15 years of age or older
The ability to complete the two-hour orientation, the application paperwork, the confidentiality training, and the health clearance. This process can take up to one month to complete.
Responsibility for wearing the designated volunteer uniform

The Teen Program
The Teen Program is open to high school students ages 15-18. There are two separate teen programs: The School Year Teen Volunteer Program and the Summer Teen Volunteer Program. Registration for these programs takes place the first week of September (School Year Program) and the first week of April (Summer Program).
Registration for our 2006 Summer Teen Volunteer Program is now closed. Our program is filled. Our next program is the 2006 - 2007 School Year Teen Volunteer Program. Registration for that program begins September 5, 2006.

The Adult Program
The Adult Program is open to adults that have time in their schedules to serve 4-5 hours a week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of seven months.
We are now accepting adult volunteers in all service areas. Our two special areas of need are the Gift Shop and the Welcoming Centers.
